Here is a quote taken from a book called:
‘Let’s Make Waves!’
By Marianne Fons and Liz Porter
Pages: 7, 9, 28.
C&T Publishing 1989
ISBN: 0-914-881-21-3

“Ocean Waves History”

“Romanticizing the Ocean Waves pattern is easy to do, even for Iowa quilters living in the middle of cornfields, with at least 1,000 miles between us and the beach in any direction.  We can imagine long-ago New England quilters actually piecing their thousands of triangles as they paced the widow’s walks on their seacoast houses, scanning the horizon for returning ships.

As with much quilt history, facts are few, and fancy is plentiful. We can’t know for sure how Ocean Waves got its name, but the visual resemblance of a typical blue-and-muslin version, such as in Photo 1, to water and whitecaps is obvious.”

A note from Catherine:

For the ‘Waves for Tommy’ project, I decided to use the quilt pattern that Fons and Porter made in 1984 for the 1985 issue of ‘Creative ideas for Living’ magazine (Photo 2).

Of course, the quilt I make will not be an exact copy, but will be made up of fabrics that are available for me to purchase at the time of making it and also according to how I choose to select the colours, patterns and so forth, on the day I make the purchase.

  1. I love the colours you have chosen. They complement the colours in the photographs so well, and your brights are happy ones! May God bless the making of the quilt and the hands that labour on it!

    1. Hello, Karen.

Thank you for supporting my idea. You are most welcome to sponsor some triangles! Tommy would be so pleased! And so would I!

You could make a direct donation in the page DONATIONS (at the top of screen on this site) which takes you directly to Tommy's site - I am in the process of setting up an account so will have to send you the details when I have them, if that is your preferred method... If you make a direct donation to Tommy's site, it would still be great if you could let me know how much you sent, so that I can keep a tab on what this site is bringing in for Tommy... and you can post him a message of encouragement either on this site/email or on his own site: www.soloatlanticrow2011.co.uk.

Thanks, you are very kind. Please keep in touch by email if you would like to: wavesfortommy@hotmail.co.uk
      Catherine :)

PS: This is the first time I have tried to do a sponsored quilt 'event' so will take a little while for me to get the hang of the technicalities of it all. But I am so enjoying it!*

  4. Morning Catherine!
I would love to sponsor you - sadly, finances decree that it won't be for as much I would like - but I expect every little helps.... When you have set up an a/c I will check back. I think your project is a truly wonderful idea, a physical expression of Tommy's long and arduous journey. I wish there were some way to raise the profile of what he is doing even further, he deserves so much more recognition than he has received. I join you in prayer for him.
    love - Tania Bacon

    1. Thank you Tania, yes every little does help... I shall not be able to set up a special account for this project - people are happy to give me cash... or you could put money into the 'Mind' collection tins which are stationed at 'The Foresters Arms', 'The Half Moon' and 'Kirdford Village Stores' in Kirdford. Tommy is wonderful for taking up such a challenge at such a young age... your prayers are most welcome. Thank you. Catherine x
